My name is Sunnie Mak. I come from Canton, China. My first language is Cantonese. I speak fluent Cantonese and some English.

I am married. My husband works in a restaurant as a cook. We have two children. They are 27 and 24 years old. They both work.

I am not working. I am retired. I live in Chinatown. I live in an apartment building on South Street. It is a 17-story building. I live on the 11th floor. It is a 3-bedroom apartment.

Most of my neighbors are African American. Some are Hispanic. They are all friendly.

My neighborhood is noisy but very safe. There is a deli store and a stadium next to my building. Behind my building is Brooklyn Bridge and FDR (a highway). There is a parking lot on the street in front of my building.

There is also a meat market and a drugstore near my home. So shopping is easy in my neighborhood.

The transportation is convenient, too, in my neighborhood. A subway station and a bus stop are only 3 blocks away from my building.

I came to America in 1979. Before I came to America, I was a cashier. I worked in a restaurant. When I first came to America, I remember, I was very scared and nervous because I was not used to the surroundings and my English was not fluent. I had to work and take care of my children. Life was very hard for me at that time. But then things improved a little after my parents came to help me take care of my children. That is why I am very thankful to my parents.

My favorite hobbies are: shopping, keeping plants, cooking, practicing tai chi, and singing. My favorite food is Chinese food and Korean food although I don’t mind western food. My favorite restaurant is “Amazing 66” on Mott Street in Chinatown. My favorite songs are Love is Blue, Jingle Bell, and Silent Night. My favorite movies are Dream of Red Chambers (红楼梦) and Liu San Jie (刘三姐)。

My favorite colors are purple, sky blue and pink.
